One hundred five years resident of Luckey OH.

Ada was born April 25th 1905 to Frank and Louise Freyer of Luckey OH. Francis Henry (Frank) Freyer IV was born the 3rd of Jan 1870 and his wife, Louise Maria Frederika Asmus was born the 29th of June 1874. They had two children Anna Freyer, born the 25th of October 1896 and Ada Freyer, for whom we write, was born almost eleven years later in 1905. Anna never married and passed in 1978. Ada married Ernest Rothenbuhler. Ernest preceded Ada in death by some forty-five years. Ernest and Ada had two girls who they named Ruth and Grace. Ruth was born in 1931 and Grace in 1935. Neither Ruth nor Grace married.

Ada was born in a time when things were still rather primitive in the small farming community of Luckey. The T F & F (Toledo Fostoria & Findlay) trolley did not operate through Luckey until 1908. So, when Ada was born the primary means of transportation were horse, mule, foot or the TNOC rail line with its mighty steam locomotives. In 1904 the first telephone company arrived in Luckey. The first electric company did not appear in Luckey until 1915 and the first radio did not appear in Luckey until 1922. So Ada was born in a time when many of the commodities that we consider necessities were not even available. In the 105 years of Ada’s life our community and life style changed tremendously.

Ada never worked outside the home but we must never think that she like the other women of this time period did not work. Ada was born into a farming family and married a farmer. The wife of a farmer especially during this time period had a tremendous number of duties. There was no electricity for lights so lanterns had to be cared for. The glass lamps would very quickly become covered with lampblack and needed to be cleaned. No electricity also meant no electric water pump and water had to be hand pumped unless one was lucky enough to have a windmill for pumping the water. Laundry was done by hand. Even soap was made by hand. Gee, even clothes were made by hand. Food had to be prepared. Can you imagine the house wife of today catching a chicken, cutting off its head, plucking the feathers, and gutting the poor thing, all before even beginning to cook. Let us not forget that the wife also had to make their own fire in the cooking stove before they could begin to cook anything. Oh, and don’t forget to fill the reservoir with water in the kitchen stove or you won’t have any hot water to clean you dishes. Bread, pies, preserves, sauces were almost always made from scratch. In the fall the wife was busy “putting up” or canning vegetables and fruits to be used for the next year.
